EDITORIAL: LIFE BEGINS AT FORTY

WELCOME TO ISSUE 40 of of Lion&Lamb!

In this issue we take a fresh look at leadership. Derek Poole explores the nature of Christian community, worship and the challenges facing leadership at the end of an era. In particular, he considers the role of leadership in helping churches to find ways to build faith communities that actively engage in the building of good relations and relate creatively to the challenges of a new Ireland.

David Montgomery considers the vocational nature of leadership and Diane Clutterbuck explores leadership as servanthood. John-Mark Mullan of IFES Ireland brings insight from his work with students – nurturing the next generation of leaders in church and society.

In a special feature entitled ‘The Word made flesh’ we look at five settings in which churches are working at the grass roots, seeking to address some of the deepest needs of local communities in Belfast, Enniskillen and Derry.

In the interview, Maria Garvey, leader of L'Arche Belfast, speaks about her experience of leading an interdenominational community which cares for the needs of adults with intellectual disabilities. She describes the challenges of being a leader in a situation that requires juggling the demands of statutory regulation with building a community rooted in a Christian vision.

At the Centre we are committed to providing resources which serve the needs of leadership in a changing world. We have had a terrific response to our resource for Holy Week, Out of the Ordinary. You may have noticed that Lion&Lamb hasn't been around for a little while so it's great to be back in print. We welcome three new people to our editorial group: Rev Allen Sleith, Rev Janet Unsworth and Fr Martin J Magill and look forward to bringing you two further issues in 2006.
