MINISTRY IN A DIVIDED SOCIETY
How will the church cope with a rapidly changing Northern Ireland? No matter what we may think about the Good Friday Agreement, whether we believe that peace is closer or further away, there has been a different atmosphere since the Agreement was signed. Security has been relaxed, become less obvious. People travel throughout the island of Ireland with greater freedom. The comparative silence of the guns has encouraged hope. So what does this means for the church? How may Christians contribute to the life of this changing community?

This issue of Lion & Lamb majors on the role of the church in a divided society. Four of the articles emanate from a series of Clergy events, where ministers gathered together to consider their role as Pastor, Priest, Prophet and Peacemaker. Also included is the text of an address given by Norman Taggart in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth on the subject of reconciliation, another topical matter. He points out that reconciliation is ‘multi-faceted a response to alienation sought in different ways and at different levels’. Peter Stevenson, in his article Forgetting to Remember, helps us to recall the visit of Stanley Hauerwas in November 1998. The challenge of that day was to find the midway point between ‘non-remembering’ and ‘overactive memory’.

As another Easter approaches, once again we find ourselves contemplating conflict. The challenge before the church is to communicate the gospel in a way that brings glory to the Lord who gave so much to redeem the world. We hope you find this issue both useful and stimulating.
